Back-to-Back

Red Sox shortstop Edgar Renteria and designated hitter David Ortiz are hitting in the 2-3 spots. It's been a great pairing so far! Edgar also got a new number yesterday. Go 3!

Go Hoyas!

Congratulations to our brother Jeff! He graduated from Georgetown School of Medicine on Sunday, May 22. He will be heading out to do his internal medicine residency at USC in late June. We are so proud of you, Jeff!

The Canceko family, including Roger and me, flew out to Washington, DC to take part in the two-day graduation festivities. It was a beautiful weekend - blue skies and gentle breezes. The perfect backdrop for our little family reunion.

On Saturday, we all convened for the baccalaureate - where Jeff did double duty as Bible Boy and Eucharistic minister - followed by some much needed dim sum - a graduation ritual for Roger and me. All seven of us piled into Jeff's Toyota Highlander - Jeff and Jer illegally crouched in the trunk space - and drove to Rosslyn for dumplings at China Garden. Mmmm! Ha Gao - so cute in their little white purses.

Later that evening, we met up again for a celebratory dinner - because we Cancekos are all about the food - in Georgetown at the Sea Catch ...

... where Roger and I presented Jeff his graduation present ...

... a Los Angeles Lakers home jersey, personalized with his name on the back and his number from high school. Go 22!

After we put the parents to bed, the kids moved on to The Tombs, a favorite Hoya Saxa haunt. We were joined my our friend and local DC person Christina and the brothers went on to share with the group what it was like "growing up Canceko."

Somehow we managed not to get too drunk or too hungover, for the next morning we all made it okay to the actual graduation ceremony at Constitution Hall. It was a great ceremony, with highlights including our dad "hooding" Jeff on stage - a true gulp-and-tears kind of moment - and the recessional to the "Throne Room" theme from "Star Wars" (the real one!).

Above is a picture of the happy family outside Con Hall. It was a really beautiful day!

And to close out ...

Thank you to Christina, who was once again our lovely DC hostess. She, and her little cat Pretzel, treated us to the lively sounds and walkable streets of Glover Park in between all the family-graduation activities. Christina was so gracious that she picked us up at BWI Friday night and took us out for dinner at tapas star Jaleo. A pitcher of sangria later, we were ready to come back to city living!
