Shut Up! Shut Out!

Last night, Roger and I were reading our respective texts - his, a manual on cardiac procedures and mine, a manual on the audio editing application Sound Forge 6.0 - as we took in the Red Sox vs. Angels game on our new favorite TV station, NESN (New England Sports Network). We enjoy listening to the NESN commentators, whom they show occasionally as two laid back guys in collared shirts, often keeping company with a small stuffed Green Monster reclining in a white adironack lawn chair and a Sox bobble head toy, we think it's Pedro Martinez. It was a good game for a Sox fan, and a Manny Ramirez fan (he went on to hit three homers), as the Sox took charge early on, 10-1.

Perhaps even sweeter was the running game summaries at the bottom of the screen that showed Cleveland Indians pummeling the NY Yankees! First it was 3-0, then 6-0, then 12-0. And on and on. • The previous AL player with six hits was Detroit's Carlos Pena on May 27 at Kansas City. Jorge Orta had been the last Cleveland player with six hits in a nine-inning game, on June 15, 1980, against Minnesota.
• Vazquez also lasted 1 1/3 innings on April 14, 1998, for Montreal against Milwaukee.
• New York had never lost by more than 18 runs, falling 24-6 at Cleveland on July 29, 1928, and 19-1 at home against Detroit on June 17, 1925.
• Previously, the Yankees' biggest shutout loss was 15-0 at home against the Chicago White Sox on May 4, 1950.
